If you haven’t seen it yet, you MUST check this out. Star Wars Clone Wars will start as a movie in theaters in August (Friday, August 15 to be exact) followed by a TV series on Cartoon Network and TNT in the fall. So far 30 episodes have been produced with more on the way according to the press release. It’s supposed to cover the time between Episode II Attack of the Clones and Episode III Revenge of the Sith, similarly to the Clone Wars cartoon by Gene Tartakovsky that aired on Cartoon Network a few years ago.

The big difference, however, is this version is all CGI. I would think this would go a bit easier than the movies which combined an extensive amount of photorealistic CG and bluescreen work with live actors. Here the CG can look like CG and its OK, instead of trying to seamlessly blend the two. That also allows (as you see in the trailer) a bit more… superhero-ish stunts and they aren’t really bound by the laws of physics or gravity anymore. (sidenote: it actually looks a bit like some of the trailers for The Force Unleashed video game…)

This will hopefully fill in some of the many gaps that Episode III left out. One of my big grievances was with their treatment of General Grievous (pun intended). If you read any of the books, or knew any of the Star Wars canon before watching the movie. Heck, if you had watched any of the Cartoon Network’s Clone Wars series, you’d know that Grievous was a seriously *badass* jedi-killer and a superior general. He was feared by jedi and regular folk alike. But in the movie he was this wheezing robot who ran away in the first battle. You don’t see Yoda causing the wheezing by crushing his ribcage on Coruscant right before he escapes with Palpatine unless you watched the cartoons (was it in the books? hmmm).

Another point of contention is you really don’t see the bond between Obi-Wan and Anakin. A kind of father/son or brothers-in-arms or BFF relationship that crumbles apart o’ so quickly at the end of Episode III. A bond so tight that Obi-Wan still believes in him many years later in Star Wars: A New Hope (the original). The collapse of Anakin was a crushing betrayal for everybody involved, but you never get a sense of that because you don’t see them that close to begin with.

AICN points out a few more at this link here. (emphasis is mine)

…It looks cool and all, but I have some major problems, most of them under the banner “Should have been in the movies.” Let’s look

Filoni said that we’ve seen the beginning and the end of the Clone Wars, but nothing in the middle, so that’s what we’re going to get. Should have been in the movies.

“It was very important to George (Lucas) that we explore a side of Anakin… you couldn’t call it the good side, but more of who was Anakin? What was he like?” Should have been in the movies.

“In THE CLONE WARS we get to look at Obi-Wan Kenobi in a slightly different way. Mainly exploring his relationship with Anakin Skywalker and seeing that they were like brothers. It will have more impact when you see Anakin’s fall.” Should have been in the movies.

One thing that looked really interesting was the addition of a padawan for Anakin, a feisty alien chick named Ahsoka Tona. I’m not sure if I have my nerd rules right, but didn’t Anakin get denied being upgraded to Jedi Master in Episode 3? Are apprentices allowed to have apprentices?

At any rate, Ahsoka seems to be something fresh in the series. Filoni describes her as having Anakin’s rebel spirit, but also some of Obi-Wan’s discipline. “She stands in between them.”

I’m sure her fate isn’t a good one since this takes place between Episodes 2 and 3 and she ain’t in REVENGE OF THE SITH….

Ahsoka Tano on starwars.comAnakin’s Padawan Ahsoka Tano

Anakin has a Padawan named Ahsoka Tano. Like AICN says above, w’ve never heard about her so its safe to assume she is rather, um, short-lived. I wouldn’t go so far as to say she’s like the guys in red shirts in Star Trek (that would be the Clones), but clearly it must be bad since she is *never* spoken of.

Also, the first of the “behind the scenes” videos is up. Get it here.

Anyway, I’m definitely looking forward to it. I can’t ever get enough sci-fi…

One response to “Star Wars Clone Wars trailer online!

  1. I think Ahsoka should fall in love with a guy named Star Slayer and he has 1 lightsaber that turns red, green, and blue. He’s also a sith/jedi. he could also beet Ventrise. He could use the force. Ahsoka Tona and Star Slayer almost kissed in front of the moon on a balcony but Vemtrise showed up and star slayer fights her by jumping of 2 buildings and he destoys one building and it falls on the one that ventrise is on and she retreats. and ventrise captures Ahso Tona and star slayer and star slayer has a friend that is an sepertist but he wont let them free so star slayer kills his friend. then he sets ahsoka Tona free and ventrise comes and they fight. And after the battle ventrise is wounded and star slayer is wounded so he goes to an hospital but the doctors finds a bottle and the set it off and it is an deadly gas and the jedi are stuck in a room because of the gas and troopers are shooting that made the gas burn but it dosnt effect star slayer and he brakes the jedi out. then star slayer found out ahsoka Tona has a mission to marry a ugly king so the republic has a base to put but at the weding Ahsoka Tona dosnt want to get married. Amd right before Ahsoka Tona star slayer kills the king. Then star slayer was forced to leave because he ruind the republics chance to put their base some were. Then Star Slayer kissed Ahsoka Tona and then he left.
