According to Goff’s latest article, DC United is “…close to finalizing a deal to acquire forward-midfielder Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva, according to two sources familiar with the negotiations.”

Apparently, he is currently playing in the Australian 1st division (called the A-league) for the champs Melbourne Victory. He plays forward and midfield, but it isn’t yet clear if he’ll fill that winger-role in a 352 that we so desperately need. Fred is 27 years old, so he should be right in his prime. It occurs to me that he may be a replacement for an aging Moreno in another year or so.

There is a big signing on the way (or so it has been rumored), but I don’t think this is it as he isn’t exactly coming from a big name league so there may yet be more to come.

Other interesting notes from the article include “In a scrimmage yesterday, rookie Guy-Roland Kpene scored two goals and Jeff Carroll, Brian Carroll, Jamil Walker had one apiece in United’s 5-3 victory over Florida International University”. I wrote an post about Guy-Roland Kpene not too long ago here.
