Welcome to the NFL Mr. RGIII.

The Redskins beat the Saints 40-32 in New Orleans in a very entertaining game, especially if you’re a ‘Skins fan.

RGIII looks like he’s the real deal. He can throw, he can run, he doesn’t look flustered. He’s not as accurate as I’d like on the long ball, but anything short & medium or where he really has to fling it down the field looks good. [My measuring stick of a great long ball was Mark Rypien floating the ball down the sideline in his prime.] The offensive line did a good job of blocking up front for him, so we’ll see how he does when he gets a few more hands in his face.

A few quick notes…

RGIII running the Option: Mr. Shanahan – Please. A few less options runs for RGIII. Please. I don’t mind using it as a change up to keep the defense on it’s toes or (even better) make next week’s defense waste time game planning a counter to it. But just do it once or twice, and maybe fake it once or twice. 10 carries is too much.

Running Game: A young QB’s best friend is a solid running game. The O-line helped Alfred Morris run for 96 yards and 2 touchdowns on 28 carries.

Offensive Line: The line did a great job of making the seams, and the runners did a great job of finding them. If the line can keep that up, I’d expect to see the occasional chunk of yardage ripped off, especially if one of the faster backs like Helu in the game. The line (and runners too) also did a real good job of protecting RGIII and giving him lanes to throw. RGIII’s mobility helped here as well, by running out of trouble, the few times there was a breakdown.

Barry Cofield: He forklifted and/or steamrolled the Saint’s Guard/Center on more than one occasion. Impressive.

The Defense: If you take out the blocked punt for a touchdown, the Saints offense only scored 24pts. Considering the powerhouse on offense that they are, that is a SERIOUS improvement over last year and they deserve a round of applause for that alone. They were able to consistently get in Brees’ face, stuff the run, knock down passes and generally push the Saints out of rhythm. Well done.

40pts: For real. When was the last time we saw THAT number on our side of the scoreboard?
